- Tell us more about yourself
Ans—I belong to the Khasi tribe. My family hails from Mawpran, Pynursula, which is located 60 kms from the capital, Shillong. We have a small bit of land and my parents do mixed farming. They grow money plant, prunes, oranges and a variety of other vegetables in the farm.
I have two brothers and five sisters and I am the second last among all my siblings. My younger brother continues to study in Meghalaya.
- How did you come to know about AIM for Seva and our Chatralayams (free student hostels)?
Ans—I got to know about AIM for Seva through a local NGO (non governmental organisation) in Meghalaya in 2009. I shifted to the Swami Dayananda AIM for Seva Chatralayam for Boys, Chikkamagalur, Karnataka the same year when I was in Class 2.
- The distance between the Chikkamagalur Chatralayam and your hometown is vast– 3212 kms. So how were the initial days like?
Ans—To tell you the truth, there was a feeling of homesickness and I did miss my parents and siblings quite a bit. But then I got adjusted in my new environment with support from other hostelers and the coordinator.
- What has been your single biggest take away from the Chatralayam?
Ans–It is a perfect eco system in every way. The Chatralayam environment focuses on discipline, hard work, team play and guidance.
- From getting basic education to now being employed, how do you feel?
Ans—If it were not for the Swami Dayananda AIM for Seva Chatralayam for Boys, Chikkamagalur, Karnataka, I would have not been able to complete my basic education. I completed by Class 10 with 78% in 2018. I then enrolled for a two year ITI (Industrial Training Institute) course at Mudgere taluk, Chikkabalapur, Karnataka.
Last month, I got absorbed as a fitter at the TVS Motor Company Limited’s plant at Mysore, Karnataka. I am drawing a salary of Rs. 13,000 per month now and I am very happy.
