Lights, colourful dresses, aromatic savouries and sweets. This sums up the Deepavali mood for many of us. What would your reaction be if you came to know that the diya or candle in your hand was actually crafted out of love by an AIM for Seva student?
As part of our skill building initiatives, a women entrepreneur who runs a candle manufacturing facility in close vicinity to the AIM for Seva’s student hostel in Repalle, Andhra Pradesh (Lalitha Devi Sistla AIM for Seva Chatralayam for Girls), has taken it upon herself to train the girls from Repalle in the art and process of candle making. This hands- on learning experience has imparted valuable vocational skills while fostering confidence, creativity, and self-reliance among the young participants.
What began as a skill building effort almost a year ago has now grown into a sustained effort, with the Chatralayam girls continuing to learn and practice the art of candle making.
Similarly, our girls at Yelahanka (DVG AIM for Seva Chatralaya for Girls and Swami Dayananda AIM for Seva Chatralayam for Girls) have been involved in diya making activity for many years now.
Recently, a one day (on 26th September 2026), diya making workshop was organized for the students, fostering creativity and cultural expression. The participants enthusiastically crafted 300 diyas, showcasing their skills and teamwork.
Ms. Deepa Nath was the workshop lead. She specialises in pencil sketching, watercolor, and decoupage. Her many years with AIM for Seva have been especially fulfilling, giving her the joy of teaching children, witnessing their growth and cherishing the warmth, respect and affection received from the students.
On that note, here’s wishing everyone a very Happy Navaratri and Deepavali from the AIM for Seva family.
