Vijayakumar G Biradar, a Class 12 student from the Jaya Smrithi Dhama AIM for Seva Chatralayam for Boys, Udupi, Karnataka, scored 92% in Class 12 and was the topper in the science stream in his school.
Vijayakumar joined the Udupi Chatralayam seven years back when he was in Class 6.Last month, he gave the CET (common entrance test) and Vijay has secured admission in computer science at the Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology & Management, Udupi, Karnataka.
“AIM for Seva has given me a good foundation and I was constantly encouraged to study,” says Vijayakumar.
A native of Jeevor village, Indi taluk, Bijapur district, Karnataka, Vijayakumar was motivated by a village elder (who was part of AIM for Seva) to join the Chatralayam in Udupi. “Looking back, I am thankful for his intervention. I studied till Class 5 in my village school and my area did not have an English medium school. I am happy that I joined AIM for Seva when I entered middle school,” says Vijayakumar.
Back home, Vijayakumar’s father toils hard on the family farm where jowar is the chief crop. His dad also doubles up as a farm hand in bigger holdings in the region.
The Chatralayam exposure has left a lasting impression on Vijayakumar. “Apart from getting an opportunity to study in an English medium school in close vicinity to the hostel, I was also taught chanting, slokas and meanings of verses from the Bhagavad Gita while living out there. Our hostel coordinator also told many moral stories and we were exposed to outdoor activities and games.”
Vijayakumar’s message to other students from rural India is to come and join the AIM for Seva Chatralayam. “The Chatralayam opens up a whole new path that propels us to pursue a fulfilling life. Come and be part of it. As for me, I will keep in touch with this institution throughout my life.”
